These folks are responsible for making sure we are prudent in our planning and balanced in what we’ve accomplished.
For a good definition of an accountant, our team leans on a quote from the great Iranian Accountant Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī’ (lived in the 9th century): ‘Doers do, but accountants do accurately.’”
We asked each team member what they like best about their role in supporting our role in prudent and responsible budgeting and planning for our communities – here’s what they had to say.
Meet Al Semmler | Senior Accountant
Says Al, the universe teaches us that unbalanced things wear out faster. Accounting is based on the simplest of equations: A-L-OE=0. What’s not to love ? This discipline tells you what sign (+ or -) should be used. It enables us to use double-entry bookkeeping principles which in turn keep things balanced.
Meet Amy Truong | Senior Accountant
I enjoy numerical puzzles and how financial equations may have singular answer, but there are many ways to approach it. Plus the versatility of tasks, working collaboratively, serving our communities…and having a forward-thinking, supportive company that realizes employees are their greatest assets.
Meet Andrew Long | Director, Finance
The thing I love most about what I do is the ability to answer complex questions about the future of a community given a set of seemingly random data. What’s not quite so exciting – but important learning – is to see how wrong I can be am when it comes to certain assumptions.
Meet Darrell Mead, CPA | Director, Accounting
Just to clarify, ALOE is not a gel used on sunburns, it stands for Assets-Liabilities-Owners Equity = 0. Accounting always balances: pluses equal minuses, ins equal outs, debits equal credits. In accounting, you get immediate notification of whether you are right or wrong. All transactions balance. If at the end you have a square peg and only a round hole left, you did something wrong. You start over until all the pegs fit.
Meet Jennifer Wressell | Accounting Associate
My favorite thing about accounting is that I can be a detective at the same time I can use math. Two things I like to do and am good at. Weird, I know, but believe it or not, there is a lot of investigative work in accounting.
Meet Lori Hiatt |Accounting Associate
I love being a part of the accounting team because we do important work that touches all of our communities. I also love being part of this company.
Meet Matthew Schuster | Senior Accountant
I love the opportunity to solve puzzles. Whether assessing financial risk or providing critical data analysis to facilitate decision-making, I love providing solutions to our team and clients. And I find it rewarding to scrutinize numbers in better service to our communities.
Meet Patsy Fawcett | Manager, Accounting
Our team has a great sense of humor. You have to be able to laugh in this line of work. We love what we do and have a lot of fun doing it.
Meet Veronica Escobedo | Accounting Associate
